5 reasons why I LOVE photographing Twilight Weddings

1. They are so dramatic, you can use candles and fairy lights to create the perfect backdrop

2. They are perfect for first look weddings

3. You can use fairy lights and candles to create the perfect backdrop

4. Twilight weddings are perfect for creative portraits

5. You can go straight from your wedding ceremony to dancing!

What is a Twilight wedding?

A Twilight wedding is usually between October and March. A wedding ceremony that takes place later in the day, usually after 5pm. During the hours of dusk or twilight, as the sun is setting. This creates a really romantic atmosphere during your wedding ceremony.
Simply put a Twilight wedding not only starts later in the day but also skips out the wedding breakfast, meaning that you can go straight from your wedding ceremony to the evening reception and dancing!

Thank you so so much – we are in love with every single one of the photos!! You captured our day so perfectly!!!

The benefits of a Twilight Wedding Ceremony

As a twilight wedding ceremony would usually take place around sunset or after dark this means you can have full control of the lighting during your wedding ceremony. This is where the location of your ceremony is key. Choosing a venue that is perfectly lit with fairy lights or asking your photographer if they feel comfortable lighting a darker ceremony means you can have photographs captured that show how your wedding ceremony really felt. Keeping the atmosphere dramatic but cosy and romantic.

The order of a twilight wedding would normally look a little different to a traditional wedding timeline. Having a twilight wedding gives you the option of completely skipping the wedding breakfast which is great if you’re working to a smaller budget for your wedding day. Twilight weddings also work really well if you’re looking for a smaller more intimate number of wedding guests.

A twilight wedding timeline example might be;

5pm – Guests arrive for drinks and canapes
5:45pm – Guests take their seats for twilight ceremony
6:00pm – Twilight ceremony (Usually a humanist ceremony – which I LOVE!)
6:45pm – Drinks reception straight into the evening entertainment and first dance
8:30/9pm – Evening food served (Buffet style or street food)
9:30pm – Dance the night away!

First Look Wedding Photographs

One of my favourite things about twilight weddings is that it gives you the opportunity to have a “First Look” with your partner. As Twilight weddings usually take place around sunset this means that after your wedding ceremony you probably aren’t going to have much time for your wedding portraits as you’ll be going straight into the evening celebrations.
A first look means that you’ll share an intimate moment as a couple before your wedding ceremony. Usually at a pre planned location, that’s quiet and intimate so that you can still have the WOW factor as you see each other for the first time on your wedding day. As you’ll be getting married later in the day this means that you’ll have plenty of time to plan a first look and have all your wedding portraits before your wedding ceremony.

What’s the difference between “Golden Hour” and “Blue Hour”?

Twilight weddings are the perfect time to be taking advantage of golden hour and blue hour during sunset. As you’ll typically be getting married later in the day this means that if you get married just before sunset you’ll be able to have awesome golden hour and blue hour photographs as newlyweds.
Golden hour is the hour before sunset. The sun is really low in the sky at this time which creates a beautiful soft glow and inspiring, romantic wedding photographs as the sun is setting.
Not to worry though, if you’re getting married at sunset then you can still make use of the amazing blue hour, which is the hour after the sun has set. As the orange glowing sun falls below the horizon the sky is immediately filled with a blue sky for the hour after sunset. This is known as blue hour. This is becoming an increasingly popular time to have wedding photographs.
If you’re having a twilight wedding way after sunset but you’re still looking for amazing wedding photographs then you still have endless possibilities of creative flash portraits that will make amazing pieces of artwork from your wedding day for your home!
